It's fun. It's hard. Let's do it together.

When Everything Changes At Once

What. A. Week!
I’m exhausted.

First day of school.
First week of school.
At a brand new school.

Nerves, excitement, smiles—and minimal tears. Total win.

First Day Smiles.

This moment has been a long time coming. Last November we first considered switching schools. My son was on board right away. My daughter? Not so much. She was still adjusting from Montessori—three years with the same teacher, freedom of choice in her work—to a classroom with desks, schedules, and switching classes. Change is hard for her.

But she worked hard, and by May she was accepted. By summer she was warming up to the idea (the school swag didn’t hurt).

And then the changes started stacking up:

  • A Summer Social where she got her “forever color” (gold… not her favorite).
  • Orientation.
  • A class social.
  • And suddenly, the first day of school—on a Tuesday, full day, no easing in.
Side by side, ready for the adventure ahead.

But here’s what made it better: they walked in together. Brother and sister, side by side, ready to face this new adventure. That picture is one I’ll treasure—it reminds me that no matter how overwhelming change feels, they don’t have to face it alone.

The verdict? He said it was better than he expected. She already has a playdate lined up.

So far, so good.

But wow—so much change.

  • New uniforms (easier, but still new).
  • A seven-day rotating schedule (where Monday might be Day 5).
  • A chaotic carline.
  • School supplies that somehow keep multiplying (“Mom, I need…”).

And it’s not just the kids. I’m adjusting too. Showing up at events, meeting new parents, re-learning the rhythms of a new school community.

It’s exhausting. But it’s also progress. Every adjustment—big or small—is one step closer to this place feeling like our school.

We’re not there yet. But we’re on our way.

💬 What about you? Are you experiencing a school transition this year—preschool, kindergarten, middle school, or even high school? I’d love to hear how it’s going for your family.
