This is Mom Life

It's fun. It's hard. Let's do it together.

The Letter My Daughter Wrote That Reminded Me I’m Doing Enough as a Parent

One of the best parts of parenting is the rare, fleeting moment when you realize you might actually be getting it right.

It doesn’t happen every day.
But when it does, it feels like winning a gold medal.

I was cleaning out my daughter’s backpack the other day when she handed me an artful design of her name and a folded letter.
“It’s not finished,” she said.

Still — cue the tears.

“Dear Mom and Dad,
I thank you for looking out for me and taking care of me. Thank you for helping me with things I struggle on and for getting better grades.”

(So maybe the all-out homework battles, extra practice, and tutoring sessions are registering as love… not torture.)

“I really appreciate when you…
Snuggle and hug me.”

(Girl, me too. Her love language is physical touch, and I love her head on my shoulder while we play footsies under a blanket during movie nights.)

“Help me when I’m having trouble.”

(At least she sees the intention behind all the reminding, coaching, and encouraging.)

“Living an amazing life.”

Cue me fainting.

An amazing life??
Despite the tiffs and arguments.
Despite struggling with certain classes and teachers.
Despite not being the youngest in the family anymore with a new baby cousin.
Despite my constant feeling that we never travel enough, never do enough, never have enough.

And yet, in her eyes, it’s an amazing life.

I guess I’m doing something right.

“One of the things I will never forget is my loving family.”

And that right there is what it’s all about.

Not perfection.
Not doing everything right.
Not having the perfect schedule, experiences, or balance.

Just showing up.
Helping when they struggle.
Loving them through the hard moments and the ordinary ones.

And hoping, quietly, that one day they see it.

Maybe we’re all doing better than we think. If you’re in the thick of parenting and constantly wondering if you’re doing enough, consider this your reminder: the love you show every single day is being noticed — even when it doesn’t feel like it.
And sometimes, it shows up in the smallest, most unexpected ways.
