This is Mom Life

It's fun. It's hard. Let's do it together.

The Turn Back

I heard someone say recently that parenting is just a series of emotional whiplash moments.

You’re exhausted. Touched out. Running on caffeine, crumbs, and the vague hope that everyone will sleep through the night for once.

You start to wonder how something so small can require so much of you.

And then—out of nowhere—they’re sweet again.

Not on your schedule. Not when you’re at your breaking point. But in these tiny, unprompted moments that catch you completely off guard.

My sister is in the newborn stage right now, deep in the kind of tired that makes you question your life choices somewhere around 3:17 a.m.

And I wanted to tell her—this part doesn’t go away.

It just… rebrands.

Toddlers. Big kids. Tweens. Teens. Same emotional rollercoaster, just with more opinions and better vocabulary.

There’s attitude. Eye rolls. A level of selective hearing that honestly deserves scientific study.

And then… they turn back.

I took my son to the orthodontist a couple months ago. Not the exciting kind of appointment—no braces coming off. Just more added. Tightened. Adjusted. The orthodontic equivalent of “this could’ve been an email.”

He was sore. Quiet. Already over the day before it really started.

I dropped him off at school.

He got out, took a couple steps, then turned back and opened the door.

“Can you bring my water jug to the game?”

Of course. Always.

He shut the door, took a few more steps.

Then turned back again.

Opened the door.

“Love you.”

And just like that—everything softened.

That’s the thing about parenting.

It stretches you to your limits in the most ordinary moments.

But it’s those unexpected ones—the turn backs, the quick “love yous,” the glimpses of who they’re becoming—that pull you right back in.

Every single time.
